This sweet, chocolatey, and delicious cafe mocha recipe is like a warm comforting hug in a mug! Cafe mochas are where my love of coffee began all those years ago and I have a feeling many others feel the same way. If that’s you, you’ll want to save yourself $7 and try this amazing recipe at home!

This recipe is one of my favorites because it has the perfect amount of sweetness. The sugar in some of the other recipes can be overpowering but in this cafe mocha recipe, we use a chocolate syrup that is sweetened with maple syrup. It adds some depth to the mocha and pairs perfectly with the chocolate flavor.

What is in a Cafe Mocha?

Cafe mochas are actually really easy to make. It takes just 3 ingredients. Espresso, milk, and chocolate sauce:

  • Espresso – We are going to use coffee in this recipe in place of a shot of espresso. If you’re trying to replicate Starbucks for your favorite coffee store, make the coffee very strong for maximum effect! (see my notes later in the post)
  • Milk – Almond milk works great in this mocha recipe but any other nut milk or milk alternative would work too! The milk should be warm and not hot. (See the tips section for more information on heating milk without scorching it).
  • Chocolate sauce – Most chocolate syrups are full of sugar. I have the most amazing chocolate sauce recipe that uses maple syrup instead. It is addicting and you’ll be using it on everything! Get the recipe HERE
  • Whipped Cream – Optional, but it adds some fun to this coffee drink!

How to make strong coffee for a Cafe Mocha

The coffee in this recipe can be as weak or as strong as you like it, but keep in mind that the coffee is part of the flavor. A weak cup of coffee will still be good, but it won’t have a strong coffee flavor.

Since we don’t drink a ton of coffee, we prefer a pour-over coffee maker. Just add the coffee grounds to the coffee maker and pour water over the grounds.

In this recipe, I use 3 tablespoons of coffee grounds and 1 cup of water. The result is strong coffee that tastes amazing in this cafe mocha!

Important Teaching Tips

  • Steamed Milk – Since we don’t have a milk steamer, we heat the milk in a saucepan on the stove. The trick to steaming milk is to warm it up over medium-low heat while constantly stirring. Once you start to see the steam coming off the milk, it is ready. Do not let the milk boil or it may start to burn or create a thick layer on the surface of the milk.
  • Whipped Cream – Whipped cream is optional but it’s always fun! I use whipped cream made from Almond Milk. It needs to be refrigerated but right before using it, run it under warm water for 30 seconds. This step is required because it won’t come out without first warming it up. Ask me how I know….I sprayed mocha all over the counter the first time!
  • Taste – Anyone who has spent time at Starbucks knows that everyone has a personal preference when it comes to coffee. Once you have your cafe mocha, adjust it to your taste. You can add more chocolate syrup if you want more chocolate (think double pump at Starbucks) or add more steamed milk if it is too strong.

Frequently Asked Questions About Making A Cafe Mocha

Can I use a Keurig to brew the coffee for the Cafe Mocha?

You sure can, but it may not have a strong coffee flavor since the Keurig tends to make a lighter coffee. Try not to use a flavored coffee since it will change the tast of the mocha.

What kind of chocolate syrup can I use if I don’t want to make it myself?

Search your supermarket to see what kind of chocolate syrup is available. Try to find one that is low in sugar or uses natural sugar instead. You could also try mixing honey and cocoa powder into the warm milk instead. It won’t be as rich but you’ll still have a hint of chocolate.

What is the difference between cafe mocha and cafe latte?

A latte uses expresso and steamed milk. It is a lighter drink since it usually has more milk than coffee. Cafe mocha is a stronger drink since it will have less milk than a latte.
