Do Pretzels Taste Good With Peanut Butter?

Pretzels and peanut butter taste amazing together!

The pretzels are topped with a peanut butter ball, real peanut pieces and then drizzled with dairy-free chocolate and sprinkles. By using gluten-free pretzel crisps, you can also make them suitable for people with gluten intolerance, so they’re the perfect treat for anyone.

Peanut butter and chocolate is a winning taste combination, and they look lovely together, too. I’ve found that nestling chocolate pretzel bites in a handmade gift box turn them into a thoughtful gift that goes down brilliantly – like some more fun chocolates!

INGREDIENTS YOU NEED

  • Pretzel crisps – I buy the big bag in bulk at Costco. This recipe will make at least 60 chocolate pretzel bites, so you will need a lot of pretzels! I have found the gluten free version a the supermarket. You’ll need more than one bag of those.
  • Creamy peanut butter – Use all natural peanut butter. The ingredients should only say peanuts! Crunchy PB could work too, but it will look chunky and may not be as pretty.
  • Coconut flour – We use coconut flour to thicken the peanut butter and keep it from dripping off the pretzel. I have not tried substituting with another flour, but almond flour might work too.
  • Turbinado sugar – Honey and maple syrup are my go to’s for sweeteners, but they just didn’t’ work in this recipe. Even though honey is sticky, the peanut butter was still too thin to stay on the pretzel. You can read more about turbinado sugar here.
  • Peanuts – Feel free to leave these off or try a different nut. Walnuts, pistachios or pecans would be delicious too!
  • Dairy-free chocolate chips – We love Enjoy Life but Kroger also recently came out with a dairy free chocolate chip and it’s half the price. I tested them out in this recipe and they worked just as well!
  • Coconut oil (optional) – Coconut oil will help to make the chocolate smooth and easier to drizzle. If your dairy free chocolate chips already have coconut oil, you may not need to add it. I like to add it every time just to be safe. It doesn’t hurt anything.
  • Sprinkles – Use your favorite sprinkles to make these chocolate covered pretzels fun and festive!

How To Make Chocolate Pretzel Bites with Peanut Butter

First, make the peanut butter ball mixture which will go on the top.

Take the creamy peanut butter, coconut flour and turbinado sugar and mix them together until they form a smooth paste.

Now, take your pretzels and lay them out on a baking sheet or tray. It’s a good idea to line the tray with parchment paper to stop them from sticking.

Put about 1 tsp of the peanut butter mixture on each pretzel, leaving a slight ball shape. Then, gently press a peanut half into the mixture.

Melt your dairy-free chocolate chips in the microwave and then drizzle the chocolate over the top. If you find it difficult to drizzle your chocolate, you can mix in a bit of coconut oil to help.

Important Teaching Tips

Melting the chocolate. Melt in the microwave by heating for 30 seconds at a time. Each time you take it out of the microwave, be sure to stir it. It will get hot, so I’d recommend using a Pyrex measuring cup with a handle.

Before adding the chocolate. It’s a good idea to put your pretzel in the freezer after adding the peanut butter, as this will help it set, meaning it looks neater.

Nuts. You can press any kind of nut into the peanut butter; walnuts and pecans both work well.

Chocolate. Use your favorite kind of chocolate! White chocolate works well too, but I’d recommend using semi-sweet.

Gluten-free. The topping is entirely gluten-free, so if you use gluten-free pretzel crisps too, these crunchy pretzel bites are suitable for people with an intolerance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chocolate Pretzel Bites with Peanut Butter

Do I have to use Dairy Free Chocolate?

No, you don’t. Regular chocolate would work great too. If you do use regular chocolate, be sure to add the coconut oil to make it easier to drizzle. You can use any chocolate you want including white chocolate, dark chocolate or semi sweet!

How long will Chocolate Pretzel Bites last?

In our house…1 day. Lol, but if they don’t get eaten in the first day, you can store them in the fridge for up to 3 days. After that they will still be good, but the pretzel might start to get stale.

Can you freeze Chocolate Pretzel Bites?

You can freeze these in an airtight container. This recipe makes such a large batch that I sometimes freeze half. We will take a few out when we are craving sweets. If you are giving these as a gift or serving them at a party, I wouldn’t recommend freezing them before hand. Instead, make them the day before and store them in the fridge.

Do I have to use pretzel crisps?

You can use any kind of flat pretzel (not rods). Regular pretzels will work, along with some of the season shapes that come out every year. It is also fun to put the peanut butter between two pretzels for a PB sandwich!

Can I cut this recipe in half?

You sure can. I purposely made this a large recipe so you could put them out at a party or give them away as gifts. If you just want to have 40-60 pretzel bites, go ahead and cut the recipe in half.
