Homemade Chocolate Sauce

Even though Hershey’s chocolate sauce is vegan, it is made with high fructose corn syrup and a lot of sugar. We needed an alternative and when we came up with this recipe for homemade chocolate sauce, we couldn’t believe how rich and creamy it was. We now make sure to keep a jar in the fridge at all times.

This chocolate sauce pours like a dream over ice cream or sliced peanut butter and apples. We even use it to make chocolate almond milk! It can be used in all the same ways you would use store-bought chocolate syrup. You can even warm it up and use it as hot fudge!

What you need to make Homemade Chocolate Sauce

  • Water – It may seem counterintuitive that water is the base of something so creamy, but trust me on this one!
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – Use a quality cocoa powder since this will give you the amazing chocolate flavor
  • Maple Syrup – Using maple syrup instead of sugar gives this an amazing depth of flavor
  • Vanilla Extract – This can be left out if you don’t have it, but it does add a little flavor to the chocolate sauce
  • Pinch of Salt

Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Lower the heat and simmer until smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Important Teaching Tips

  • Whisk the entire time – Even though this is dairy-free, it is important to whisk the chocolate sauce while it is on the heat to keep it from scorching. The sauce should be brought to a boil over medium heat and then the heat should be lowered.
  • It will thicken while it cools – This recipe will be a little thin while simmering, but it will thicken up slightly while it is cooling. This is a chocolate sauce so it will still be a thin, pourable consistency
  • How to thicken a chocolate sauce – If you want a thicker sauce, create a slurry of 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 teaspoon of cold water. Mix well and then whisk it into the sauce. If you want it even thicker, add 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and water.
  • Storage – Store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It will last up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chocolate Sauce

Can homemade chocolate sauce be frozen?

Chocolate sauce can be frozen, but it will change the consistency slightly. Since this recipe can be made in 5 minutes, it tastes best when made fresh. If you are going to be using it as hot fudge, you can use it straight off the stove!

Is chocolate sauce vegan?

Most chocolate sauces are vegan if they use a water base. This is a vegan chocolate sauce recipe but it is also free of refined sugar, unlike other recipes.

Is chocolate sauce the same as chocolate syrup?

They are essentially the same but chocolate syrup tends to be thicker and better for dipping. Chocolate sauce is great for pouring, such as pouring over ice cream or into hot drinks. To turn this chocolate sauce recipe into chocolate syrup, make a slurry of 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 teaspoon cold water and whisk it into the chocolate sauce after removing it from the heat.

Can I use chocolate syrup instead of melted chocolate in recipes?

Chocolate syrup is not a good alternative to melted chocolate. The melted chocolate will have stabilizers in it that help it to harden when cooled. Chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce will not harden when cooled.

Can I double this recipe?
