Green smoothies are an easy way to get a days worth of nutrients before you even step out the door. The secret to making them is to find just a couple of recipes that you love. Then stick to them for a while. You won’t feel overwhelmed with options and you are more likely to incorporate them into your morning routine!
Easy Green Smoothie
Green smoothies are a staple in our home so I can’t believe I haven’t posted a recipe until now! I started making green smoothies about the time my kids started refusing vegetables. It was an easy way to get some nutrients in to them. Naturally, we started with sweeter smoothies and slowly added a little more greens as they (and us) got used to the taste! Now I am happy to report that we are have cut back on the fruits and have found a recipe that has a good balance of flavors!
Clean Eating – Keep it Simple
After years of making green smoothies, I can tell you that the secret to sticking to it is to pick 2 or 3 versions that you like and just stick to it. Unless you are one of the rare few who has time in the mornings to play around with different recipes, you will want to do as little thinking as possible! Also, it can be pricey to make smoothies on the daily, so you won’t want to waste fresh ingredients by creating a disgusting smoothie 🙂
I am sharing what I consider our base recipe. We go to Costco each weekend and pick up 1-2 tubs of spinach, a bunch of bananas, a tub of almond butter and Almond milk. Then we are set for the week. In the mornings, I crawl downstairs, throw it all in a blender and walk out the door. There is very little thinking involved!
Start the Morning Right
The best part of this Green Smoothie Recipe is that by starting your day with these nutrients, you don’t need to worry if you aren’t able to squeeze in any more vegetables throughout the day. At least you started it off right! And I am convinced that these smoothies keep me from getting sick.
Get Creative!
Try adding one of the following, or anything you have in your pantry
- Flax Seeds
- Chia seeds (but just a little bit because it will thicken)
- Berries
- Maca Powder
- Green Coffee
Just a word of caution – be aware of sugar content. Fruits have a lot of sugar and I have heard of people who were trying to lose weight actually gain weight because they were adding too many fruits. Same goes for juicing!
Kid Friendly Modifications:
To make this recipe more kid friendly, add fruits that will hide the taste of the greens. Apples, Pineapple, banana and berries are great at this job. The spinach has a mild flavor, but start small and gradually increase the amount of spinach over time.
