There’s nothing better than a warm slice of toast in the morning—but what if you’re living dairy-free? Butter is often the go-to choice, but the good news is that there are lots of delicious dairy-free spreads that taste just as good (some even better!).

1. Avocado

Creamy, nutrient-packed, and full of healthy fats, avocado is a classic butter alternative. Mash it with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, or get creative with toppings like tomatoes, everything bagel seasoning, or chili flakes for a quick and satisfying snack.

A few years ago there was a viral TikTok recipe with a grated hard-boild egg on top of the avocado. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and salt and it’s still one of my favorites!

Why it works: Rich, creamy texture and heart-healthy fats.

2. Nut Butters (Almond, Peanut, Cashew)

Nut butters are a go-to dairy-free spread. They’re creamy, protein-packed, and add a satisfying richness to your toast. For extra flavor, drizzle with honey or sprinkle with cinnamon.

A true classic and my go to for busy mornings!

Why it works: Protein + healthy fats keep you full longer.

3. Seed Butters (Sunflower, Pumpkin, Tahini)

If you can’t do nuts, seed butters are a fantastic alternative. Sunflower seed butter is slightly sweet, tahini is savory and earthy, and pumpkin seed butter is rich and nutty.

Why it works: Allergy-friendly and nutrient-dense options.

4. Coconut Oil or Coconut Butter

Coconut oil spreads easily on warm toast, giving it a subtle tropical flavor. Coconut butter is thicker and creamier, with natural sweetness that pairs beautifully with fruit toppings.

Why it works: Healthy fats and a hint of sweetness without dairy.

5. Hummus

For a savory twist, hummus is a great dairy-free spread. Made from chickpeas, tahini, and olive oil, it adds protein and creaminess to toast. Try it plain or topped with cucumbers, roasted red peppers, or sprouts.

Why it works: Savory, plant-based protein boost.

6. Guacamole

Take your avocado toast up a notch by spreading guacamole instead. The lime and spices add brightness and flavor, making it a satisfying alternative to plain butter.

Why it works: Flavor-packed and filling.

7. Dairy-Free Cream Cheese

There are several great store-bought dairy-free cream cheeses made from cashews, almonds, or coconut. They spread just like traditional cream cheese and pair perfectly with jam, smoked salmon, or fresh herbs.

I’m going to be completely honest here – dairy free cream cheese doesn’t come close to the real thing. It’s great if you use it sparingly and add toppings but you’ll be disappointed if you smother a bagel with it.

Why it works: Classic texture and versatile flavor.

8. Fruit Jam or Chia Jam

For a sweet option, skip the butter and spread jam directly on your toast. Or make a simple chia jam with mashed fruit and chia seeds for a low-sugar, nutrient-rich alternative.

Why it works: Adds sweetness and fruity flavor without dairy.

9. Olive Tapenade

If you love bold, savory flavors, olive tapenade is a unique spread that pairs beautifully with crusty bread or toast. Made with olives, garlic, and olive oil, it’s salty, tangy, and satisfying.

Why it works: A gourmet dairy-free option full of flavor.

Which Will You Try First?

Going dairy-free doesn’t mean giving up toast—you just need the right alternatives!

From creamy avocado to nut butters, hummus, and dairy-free cream cheese, there are so many delicious spreads you can use instead of butter. Experiment with different flavors to keep your mornings exciting and your meals dairy-free.
