Candy cane spoons, dairy free chocolate and fluffy marshmallows make these hot chocolate spoons the ultimate holiday indulgence! Enjoy a cup of homemade hot chocolate next to a warm fire or give it as a gift!

This recipe makes 6 spoons because that is how many come in a box but feel free to double, triple or quadruple the recipe!

The credit for this great idea goes to my creative daughter! She always comes up with such fun and delicious ideas and then reminds me for weeks that we need to make them! This one did not disappoint. As soon as the first hot chocolate spoon was done, the kids were testing it in a warm glass of homemade cashew milk.

Hot chocolate spoons make a beautiful gift too. Wrap them in a cellophane bag and add a cute tag with serving instructions. You could also place them on a platter with some other Christmas treats like our Peanut Butter Pretzels, Christmas Fudge, and Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Easy Homemade Christmas Gift

Everyone enjoys hot chocolate so these hot chocolate spoons are a perfect gift! We used dairy-free chocolate chips and mini marshmallows, making this both a dairy-free and gluten-free recipe that anyone can enjoy.

Not only do hot chocolate spoons make a great gift idea for kids and adults, but save some for yourself because they are perfect for stirring in hot milk while cuddling up and watching Christmas movies on family movie night.

Normally you would need a double boiler and small saucepan to make smooth melted chocolate, but we are going to use a heatproof bowl to gently melt our chocolate instead.

When you are ready to make some rich and delicious hot cocoa, add 1 1/2 cup of warm milk to a glass. Then stir the hot chocolate spoon in the warm milk until it is melted. The chocolate will melt, the marshmallows will float to the top and the candy cane spoon will start to dissolve into the hot chocolate. It is so delicious!

Toppings for Hot Chocolate Spoons

Here is the fun part! Get creative with the toppings on the spoons. If you use marshmallows as we did, you won’t have much room for anything else. So choose wisely! Here are just some festive and fun toppings!

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Toffee pieces or Toffee bits
  • Crushed candy cane pieces
  • White chocolate shavings
  • Butterscotch chips
  • White chocolate chips
  • Peanut butter chips
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Orange zest
  • Instant coffee granules (for adults, obviously!)

Hot chocolate spoons are so forgiving, so play around and try anything with different toppings!

INGREDIENTS YOU NEED

Hot Chocolate Spoons only take a handful of ingredients but they do require some gathering of ingredients:

  • Candy Cane Spoons – I found candy cane spoons at Home Goods so I picked up a few boxes. Since then I have seen it at Target and Walmart too. If you can’t find them, you can also use candy cane sticks.
  • Silicone Ice Cube Squares – The size of the ice cube squares that you select will determine how much chocolate you need and how big your chocolate cube will be. I used 1-inch cubes and they take about 3 Tbsp of mini chocolate chips
  • Dairy Free Chocolate Chips – I use dairy-free chocolate chips but you can also use regular chocolate chips.
  • Marshmallows
  • Sprinkles – These are optional, but why not add them in?!

Put the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and place them in the microwave until completely melted. Use a spoon to fill the ice cube mold and gently insert spoons into the middle of the chocolate. Add marshmallows and desired toppings.

How To Make Hot Chocolate Spoons

These are so easy to make and they take as quick as 10 minutes, or if you like to decorate, you could spend up to 20 minutes making these easy treats!

  1. Fill the silicone mold with chocolate chips. You will need one square per candy cane spoon.
  2. Microwave it for 1 minute and then mix each square. Continue microwaving for 30-second intervals until melted.
  3. Let the chocolate sit for a few minutes so it starts to cool off. This will help the candy cane spoon stand in the chocolate. Use the marshmallows to hold the spoon in place.
  4. Carefully place the silicone mold into the fridge. You may need to readjust the spoons to help them stand straight
  5. Let it sit in the fridge until completely set. This may take 30-60 minutes.
  6. Serve and enjoy! Your kids will love making their own hot chocolate!

Important Teaching Tips

  • Peppermint Spoon breaks – The peppermint spoons that I was using looked nice and thick, but they were still fragile. I dropped one and it snapped. Fortunately, that was before I put it in the chocolate. I lost one more at the end of the process because I bumped it. This just means that you’ll want to make more than you need just in case you lose a few along the way!
  • Making as a gift – This makes such a cute gift! I found that dairy-free chocolate can start to turn white after a week or so. If you are going to give these as a gift, keep them in the fridge until you are ready to hand them out. That keeps them fresh and prevents them from turning white.
  • Stir the chocolate while melting – We are going to melt the chocolate in the microwave but you will need to stir the chocolate when it comes out. Since we are working with small squares, I like to use a chopstick to stir. However, you can also use the back of a fork or spoon.
  • Release the chocolate from the mold – If you are using a silicone mold, you shouldn’t have any issues releasing it from the mold. Just be very careful because the candy cane spoon handle can snap. If needed, run the mold under warm water for 5-10 seconds to melt the outside and release it from the mold.

This is a personal preference, but milk will give you a much creamier and smoother hot chocolate. This particular recipe does best with milk because we are using melted chocolate chips that don’t melt well in water.
